2. Attention Women’s Christian Fellowship Board Members: The Board will meet Wednesday, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Please plan on attending as plans will be made for our meetings and outings for the coming year.
3. Walk thru the Bible. Sunday, August 29. Registration starts this Sunday for Walk Thru the Bible! This will be open to all ages and is a fun, interactive learning -- no lectures, no note taking. Stop by the registration table in the narthex to register or for more details.
4. Recital: Pianists Allegra and Rebecca Sorley will present a recital featuring four hands on one and two pianos to benefit the International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF), Sunday, August 8 at 3:00 p.m. in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall of the U of I Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. The Sorleys are hoping to raise $2,500 for the ICHF which provides life-saving heart surgery for children around the world. The program will include music by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Milhaud and Richard Bennett. Donations can be taken at the door or go to www.babyheart.org. You can call Rebecca at 788-3400 with any questions.
5. Refuge News: Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation, in fact the need increases with the children being out of school and not receiving lunches. The stocks at The Refuge are at an all time low! The staples we provide are running low for corn, peas and newborn & pull-up diapers. Anything else would also be a great help, i.e. canned meats, canned potatoes, mixed vegetables, ramen noodles, soups, breakfast food and canned fruits.
6. Volunteers are needed for a Feed the Children food distribution offered by Caring and Sharing Community Center, Wednesday, August 18, 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Three-hour shifts are available, 8 to 11 and 11 to 2. It is located at 2500 S. High School Rd. (the old long-term airport parking). They expect 7 semi-truck loads of food to distribute to 2000 families. Volunteers need to arrive 15 minutes prior to their shift. See the flier and sign-up sheet in the narthex or call Mark Slauter 888-5142 or msslauter@prodigy.net.
7. Habitat for Humanity House Build Phase 2The Brown County chapter for Habitat for Humanity has begun construction of a new home for a family with seven children. A crew from our church spent a day at the site on July 13, working on the foundation and beams to support the floor joints. Plans are underway for a second work day, Tuesday, August 17. We expect to be installing siding. If you are interested, call Dave Swalve, 888-7991 or dgswalve@comcast.net.
8. The next mission trip to New Orleans will be Saturday, Oct. 9 to Oct. 16. There is still a lot work to be done in many areas of the city. If you would like to help with Hurricane Katrina Recovery, please sign up in the narthex. Contact Gary K. Johnson, 797-0661 or Dave Swalve, 888-7991 if you have questions.
9. Attention Lock up volunteers: recently difficulties have risen in locking up the church properly. It’s important to remember if the doors seemed locked at first try, don’t attempt to jiggle or pull hard on the handles. For the immediate future, the front desk will lock the back doors at the end of business day and those groups meeting in the evening will need to use the front doors only. Thank you.
10. New Members class: A new members class will be offered beginning September 12. If you or someone you know has an interest in joining the church, call the church office. More information will be forthcoming. For questions, call Marge Slauter at marge_slauter@prodigy.net.
11. Dinner and the Theatre: Join us for the evening on Sunday, August 22 at Beef & Boards for a lively production of the musical comedy Church Basement Ladies.
